In November of 2022, the public was blown away by the debut of ChatGPT, which generated text on command.
Now, close to a year later, chatbots are part of the daily lives of people around the world. Automated text generation in the workplace has become as commonplace as cars on the highway.
A.I. developers everywhere have been hard at work bringing the next round of innovations to the public. OpenAI recently made an announcement that you can now generate images on ChatGPT.
However, you need to be a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and integrate the DALL-E plugin.
There’s more to learn about DALL-E 3 and its integration into ChatGPT, which you can read about below.
ChatGPT Plus Subscribers Can Generate Images
If you do not subscribe to the paid ChatGPT Plus service, then you will still only be able to generate text.
For business owners who already subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, then the unveiling of DALL-E 3 for ChatGPT is sure to generate excitement—and plenty of images as well!
If you need to generate images for your work, then you can certainly benefit from subscribing to ChatGPT Plus, which only costs $20 a month.
What Is DALL-E?
First thing’s first: It is pronounced dahl-ee, which is sort of clever when you think about it.
As an art generator, it references the well-known Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí.
As an automated platform, it recalls the Pixar animated feature WALL-E. The visual similarity between the names DALL-E and WALL-E is likely no coincidence.
Generative A.I. for images is not new. For some reason, it has just not caught on as much as text-generating A.I. like ChatGPT. Although, it has creeped into the public consciousness in various ways, such as when A.I.-generated images of Pope Francis, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, went viral.
A good example of this is that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now a household name, yet its image-generating DALL-E is still relatively obscure.
Just as ChatGPT has been through various iterations (we are now at GPT-4), DALL-E has been getting upgraded as well.
How to Create Pictures from ChatGPT
Once DALL-E is integrated, the human-A.I. game of Pictionary begins.
It works very similar to using ChatGPT. You just need to type out a request for an image, and you will receive what you ask for.
Your requests can be very detail-heavy, as the image-generator can accommodate multiple paragraphs of description.
In other words, don’t be afraid to ask ChatGPT and DALL-E to make your wildest imaginations into a reality.
So, if for whatever reason your business needs for marketing purposes an image of the Indianapolis 500 where the cars are phaetons—with wheels that are edible wheel-blocks of gouda cheese—pulled by giant ground sloths with purple-tinted hair, then you shall receive this.
The Advantages of Image-Generating A.I.
Something to think about when it comes to image-generating A.I. is that the possibilities are quite limitless.
Content Restrictions for ChatGPT and DALL-E
Before you go hog-wild with that image-generating platform, there are some caveats about ChatGPT and DALL-E that you should be apprised of.
For instance, there are content restrictions that you should know about.
The first is that these platforms will not generate sexual content for you. OpenAI will keep your mind out of the gutter here.
Another one is that public figures cannot be used in your content. Sorry, but you cannot get a free endorsement from “Willie Nelson” to sell your new line of snack foods.
Also, you will generally be barred from generating anything like violent or hateful content. The goal here is to limit users’ ability to easily create offensive images.
The good news is that no business owners in their right mind would violate any of these content restrictions for the sake of marketing content.
Can You Sell DALL-E Art?
Yes, and no.
Yes, because you can reprint A.I.-generated art without any permission.
No, because U.S. lawmakers decreed that a human cannot copyright an image or artwork that A.I. created.
Good advice, then, would recommend that you not even bother trying to profit off the image alone.
However, being able to use the A.I.-generated art means that you can freely use A.I.-generated images in your marketing materials free of charge. That, after all, is probably the primary use that this tool has for business owners.
When Will DALL-E 3 Be Available for ChatGPT Plus Subscribers?
As of this blog’s late-September 2023 writing, DALL-E 3 is expected to drop in October of 2023.
Once it does drop, we will have more information for you about the use of this tool and how you can get the most out of ChatGPT Plus, along with other A.I. tools for your business.
